In her first feature film, Ugandan director Caroline Kamya tells three stories of contemporary Uganda. Mary is a maid working in an upper-class household in the suburbs, who suddenly needs to raise money to pay a bribe to get her wrongly accused sister out of jail. Olweny is a child soldier returning to his home village after years of war and rehabilitation. Armstrong is a successful break-dancer and DJ who returns to the slums of Kampala and needs to come to terms with a former friend and gang leader. The three never meet, but their stories reveal much about life in present-day Uganda and about imani, which means “faith” in Swahili. Like the stories it tells, the film is a striking blend of the traditional and the contemporary.
