ABOUNA / OUR FATHER

Directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun

Chad, 2002 , 84 min.

In honor of the director’s visit, CFAF is offering a repeat performance of this audience favorite from 2004. Following their father’s desertion, 15-year-old Tahir and eight-year-old Amine try to discover why he has gone away, and why he is “irresponsible.” Their efforts get them into trouble, threatening to break up what remains of their family, while at the same time creating a very special relationship between the two boys. Lovingly photographed, Abouna won the award for best cinematography in 2003 at FESPACO, the Pan-African Film Festival in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

In Chadian Arabic with English subtitles.

We deeply regret that Mahamet-Saleh Haroun’s visit to the 21st Cascade Festival of African Films has been canceled. Difficulties with his visa have not been resolved in time for his travel. However, his film will be screened as scheduled.
