We are honored to open the 21st festival with Mahamet-Saleh Haroun and his 2010 Cannes award-winning film A Screaming Man. Mr. Haroun is one of today’s best filmmakers, and the Cascade Festival of African Films (CFAF) has been proud to showcase a number of his films over the years, including Bye-Bye Africa in 2001, Abouna/Our Father in 2004, Daratt/Dry Season in 2008, and Sex, Okra and Salted Butter in 2010. With his latest film, Mr. Haroun returns to themes of family and loyalty in war-torn Chad. He tells the story of Adam, a former swimming champion and local hero, who works as a pool attendant at a luxury hotel in the capital city N’Djamena. When the hotel falls under new management, Adam is demoted, and his son is hired to replace him. To add to his humiliation, Adam is too old to join the civil war still raging in the country. With his signature style of austere profundity, Mr. Haroun reveals the full tragedy of this African father’s story.

We deeply regret that Mahamet-Saleh Haroun’s visit to the 21st Cascade Festival of African Films has been canceled. Difficulties with his visa have not been resolved in time for his travel. However, his film will be screened as scheduled.
